Transit Visas
A transit visa is a visa that allows people to pass through Australia to another country or to join a ship as crew member. A transit must be obtained at an Australian Embassy before travelling to Australia.
The relevant visa is Transit Visa (subclass 771) and allows the holder to enter and remain in Australia for 72 hours.
This visa is free of charge.
You DO NOT need a Transit Visa if:
you are a Polish citizen who:
-
intends to depart Australia by air within 8 hours of their arrival; and
-
you have a ticket and documentation necessary to enter the country of their destination; and
-
you do not leave the airport transit lounge.

You DO need a transit visa if:

your stay in the transit lounge is longer than 8 hours ; or
-
you depart the transit lounge for any reason for any length of time; or
-
you are a seaman joining a vessel (please also refer to Maritime Crew Visa) , or
-
your nationality is not covered by the Transit without Visa Arrangements
How to apply for a transit visa
To apply for a transit you need to provide the Embassy with:

a completed form 876
-
a passport valid for travel
-
a recent photo
-
an itinerary indicating travel plans and confirmed onward booking to continue your journey
-
correct documentation (eg.visa) for entry to that third country.
Seamen joining a vessel should provide:
-
a completed form 876
-
a passport valid for travel
-
a recent photo
-
a letter from a shipping agency with the following details:
-
names of the persons joining the vessel as crew
-
names of the persons they are replacing
-
name of the vessel
-
date of arrival in Australia of the persons to be visaed
-
port and date they are expected to join the vessel
